(1-minute read)  Many adults with ADHD or autism (including those with subtle or late-identified autistic features) know what it feels like to try therapy and still be overwhelmed by anxiety, self-doubt, or emotional triggers that don’t respond to insight alone. Traditional talk therapy can sometimes miss the way the nervous system stores distress, especially in neurodivergent brains.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based approach that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer hijack your emotional state. What makes EMDR especially helpful for neurodivergent adults is that it can be adapted to your pace and sensory needs. Bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound) is adjusted to be comfortable, and you are not required to narrate your past in detail.

Being neurodivergent does not make trauma “less real” — it often makes memories and the body’s reactions feel more intense and persistent. EMDR allows us to work with how your brain naturally processes information, not against it, helping reduce emotional reactivity and improve your sense of safety and regulation.

If you’ve ever felt like your nervous system remembers more than your mind does, EMDR may offer a new way forward.

If you’re curious whether EMDR could be a good fit for your needs, I invite you to schedule a free consultation to talk it through.
