(1 minute read)  While they seem like separate issues, ADHD and anxiety frequently co-occur, creating a double whammy of challenges. Understanding this connection is key to managing both effectively.

Imagine this: You have ADHD and a looming deadline at work. Focusing is already difficult. The unfinished project begins to fuels anxiety, making concentration even harder. You can’t get started which increases your anxiety. You decide to clean out your in box instead. Your anxiety increases even more. And you have no idea where to begin with the project. This vicious cycle worsen both conditions.

Here’s a closer look at why they often appear together:

  • Stress of Unmet Expectations: ADHD can make it hard to meet deadlines, remember details, or stay organized. This constant struggle can trigger anxiety about disappointing others or failing to meet goals.
  • The “What-If” Game: Anxiety often involves excessive worry. When combined with ADHD’s tendency to lose track of time or forget details, the “what-if” scenarios can become overwhelming.
  • Trouble Calming Down: People with ADHD often struggle with restlessness and impulsivity. When anxious, these symptoms can worsen, making it difficult to relax and de-stress.

The good news is that there are ways to manage both ADHD and anxiety. Here are some tips:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This therapy helps identify negative thought patterns and develop coping mechanisms to manage anxiety and improve focus.
  • Mindfulness Practices: Meditation and deep breathing exercises can help calm the mind and improve emotional regulation, benefiting both ADHD and anxiety.
  • Organization Techniques: Creating routines, using planners, and decluttering your environment can reduce stress and improve focus for individuals with ADHD.
  • Seek Professional Help: A therapist (like me!) can diagnose both conditions and develop a personalized treatment plan that may include medication and therapy.
